Q: Please tell us a little about yourself. What is your story?

A. Ever since I was a child, I loved dressing up, makeup, weddings, and watching how women carried themselves. I have always been an artist at heart. I wanted to make people happy. At one point, I even wanted to be a comedian or an actor. Anything connected to creativity and artistry felt like home to me.

Academics were not my strongest area because of dyslexia. I struggled in school and was often made to feel that I would not become successful. But I was a strong athlete, a painter, and I loved stage performances. That creative confidence never left me.

When I came to Canada, I found work in a spa. I had experience in brow threading and aesthetics from back home, so that helped me land a job. At the time, it wasn’t about building a big career — it was about earning a living. But those early jobs shaped my path. I enhanced my skills in makeup artistry, aesthetics, and even worked in television and radio projects. I became a freelance makeup artist for Indian brides and other clients.

That was the beginning of my journey.

Q: What inspired you to start Girlfriends Brow Bar, and what gap did you see in the beauty industry?

A: When I started Girlfriends Brow Bar, I was rebuilding my life. I had previously lost a business in Surrey and was starting again, this time from a small den in my home, with two young children to support.

I named it Girlfriends Brow Bar very intentionally. I wanted to create a space where women could gather, learn from one another, and draw strength from each other’s stories. I had previously run a full-service spa, but I truly understood the phrase “jack of all trades, master of none.” I decided I wanted to master one thing — brows.

Brows gave instant results. In just a few minutes, I could lift someone’s entire face and mood. It was affordable, quick, and powerful. I loved that transformation.

In Prince George at that time, I did not see businesses focused on one specialized beauty service. So, I opened a small studio — about 300 to 600 square feet — working alone, five days a week. I signed just a one-year lease to test the market.

The response was strong. I moved my home clients to the storefront and created a welcoming space where women could relax with tea. Many mothers would bring their children from swimming or ski lessons and apologize for the chaos. I always told them not to apologize. I even asked them not to remove their children’s shoes — I didn’t want to create more work for them.

That’s how Girlfriends began — first as Girlfriends Beauty Lounge from my home, and then as Girlfriends Brow Bar on Victoria Street in Prince George. Soon after, I hired my first employee.

Q: You’ve grown to multiple locations. What were the pivotal moments in that journey?

In the beginning, expansion was not the goal. My focus was to build one solid store with strong foundations — operationally, culturally, and ethically.

Before opening additional locations, I wanted a team that deeply understood our mission. We were not just shaping brows; we were creating a space of belonging. We did not preach vanity. We emphasized relationships, sisterhood, and comfort. Sometimes clients didn’t even need a service — they just needed a cup of tea and someone to listen.

The pivotal moment was realizing that we had built a strong foundation, high standards, integrity, consistent customer service, and a team-first mentality. Once that structure was stable, expansion to Kelowna and Vancouver felt like a natural next step.

Q: Can you share a moment in your career that you’re particularly proud of?

When I was around 22 years, I took a government-funded self-employment program called SEEDS. It was a six-month program that taught business fundamentals — structure, departments, mission statements, marketing, and operations.

My children were very young at the time. My mother would care for them while I attended classes for four to five hours a day. That program gave me confidence. It showed me that I didn’t need to have all the answers — I just needed to be willing to learn.

Because I struggled academically growing up, I carried self-doubt for many years. That program helped me to shake off that belief. I realized I had talent, drive, and the ability to implement what I learned. That was a turning point.

Q: How do you balance business and family life?

I have two daughters, and the mission of empowering women extends naturally into my home. I believe I was gifted with this opportunity to practice the same values in both spaces.

I involve my daughters in conversations and ask for their opinions, no matter their age. I believe young girls should know that their voice matters. That builds confidence early.

There are stressful days, of course. But the core values — respect, ethics, empowerment — remain the same at home and in business. That alignment makes balance feel more natural.

Q: How has WeBC supported you?

WeBC supported me at a time when I was actively looking for mentorship and hoping to connect with more local women entrepreneurs. Through their mentorship program, I had the opportunity to participate in an eight-week program led locally by Jennifer, which provided valuable guidance and perspective.

The program gave me a sense of grounding as a business owner and introduced me to new, out-of-the-box ideas that helped me think about my business differently. It also created a supportive environment where I was able to build genuine friendships and connect with other women entrepreneurs.

What I appreciated most was that the advice and support from WeBC felt authentic and aligned with their core mission of empowering women in business. Their mentorship and community support have been both encouraging and impactful.

Q: What advice would you give to women starting their own business?

Financial independence is incredibly important. Whether you build a large company or become self-employed, having ownership over your income strengthens your confidence and protects your future.

Start small. Start humble. Build something that works before expanding. That is the biggest lesson that helped me grow to multiple locations.

Have faith in yourself before anyone else believes in you. Learn from people ahead of you. Create a clear roadmap. And trust that steady growth is stronger than fast growth.

Q: If you had unlimited funds for one day, what would you do?

I would create an organization that supports women who feel stuck — whether in difficult marriages, financial hardship, or limited education.

I would build a system that offers skill training, employment opportunities, and safe childcare under one roof. A place where women can rebuild confidently and support their children at the same time.

That is my dream project.

Q: What do you feel is your greatest strength?

A: My ability to seek help and ask questions, and my sheer determination to succeed.

Q: What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned as an entrepreneur?

A: Failure is a huge part of the experience. Without it, we can’t grow or learn.

Q: What challenges have you faced, and how have you overcome them?

A: Living rurally brings shipping and supply challenges. Technology was a big hurdle. Working from home has its pros and cons. And learning chocolate took years, I’ve only recently felt truly confident in my craft after battling imposter syndrome for much of the journey.

Q: What advice would you give another woman entrepreneur?

A: Find an experienced business advisor. Set clear goals and revisit them every year. When opportunities come up, make sure they align with your goals, and always look at the numbers.

Q: What role does your business play in the community?

A: I’m deeply committed to educating people about where chocolate comes from, how it’s made, and why ethical sourcing matters. There’s a dark side to the industry that many people don’t see, and I’ve built Viva Cacao around social justice and transparency.

Kelowna, B.C. – Women entrepreneurs are generating significant economic returns in British Columbia, with WeBC reporting that $8.5 million in loans over the past five years has produced $223 million in business revenue province-wide.

WeBC is a federally-funded not-for-profit organization that has supported women entrepreneurs across BC for over 30 years. The organization also saw a 43 per cent increase in demand for its loans, advisory services and training programs, supporting more than 6,500 women entrepreneurs.

Despite their proven track record and contribution to the economy, women entrepreneurs continue to face systemic financing barriers and receive significantly less funding than their male counterparts.

The figures come as International Women’s Day 2026 draws attention to the value that comes from investing in women. It reinforces what WeBC sees in its data: supporting women through time, knowledge, resources and support creates broader economic and social returns.

“In B.C., every dollar WeBC lends to a woman entrepreneur generates more than $15 in new economic activity,” said Shauna Harper, CEO of WeBC. “That is proven measurable economic growth.”

WeBC says models that combine financing with business advisory support are proving most effective, and that closing the gender lending gap for women represents a clear opportunity to strengthen economic growth across the province.

“We know that when women are funded, communities gain,” said Harper. “Giving capital, mentorship, partnership and visibility to women entrepreneurs multiplies opportunity. When women thrive, our economy grows stronger.”

Vancouver, B.C – An estimated $150 billion in economic activity has been lost over the past eight years as Canadian women entrepreneurs face ongoing barriers to business financing. A new report explores why this gap has proven so persistent.

A new report released by WeBC cites that closing the entrepreneurial gender gap could grow Canada’s GDP by up to six per cent, unlocking billions in new economic activity. The gap stems from systemic barriers in access to capital that limit the growth of women-led businesses.

WeBC is a not-for-profit and development lender that has provided business loans to women entrepreneurs in BC for 30 years.

“We know women are building strong businesses and contributing to local economies, yet every day we speak to women who face barriers when trying to access financing from traditional lenders,” said Shauna Harper, CEO of WeBC. “Canada’s current systems don’t reflect how women build and scale companies. When these growing businesses can’t access capital, Canada loses jobs, innovation, and economic development in the process.”

The findings come from Understanding Loan Experiences for Women and Non-Binary Entrepreneurs, part of WeBC’s Fostering Inclusive Economic Growth project. The project, funded by Women and Gender Equality Canada, works with financial institutions to improve lending systems and make financing more accessible for women business owners.

The report finds that, even in 2026, financing barriers remain entrenched. Women entrepreneurs cite bias, outdated collateral and credit history requirements, and complex application processes as key obstacles to accessing funding from financial institutions.

Many respondents say their businesses are viable and credit-worthy yet are screened out by current lending models. As a result, financial institutions are missing out on long-term clients with strong repayment histories.

One respondent shared, “I changed banks after that experience. I’d rather deal with a lender who sees me as a real business, not a risk.”

WeBC’s research shows that 28% of women business owners do not apply for business loans simply because they believe they will be declined, while 61% say their business models are not well-supported by existing funding models. As a result, women entrepreneurs say they’re forced to delay their expansion plans, postpone hiring, or turn to higher-cost alternatives like credit cards and personal loans. The report found that this limited access to financing slows overall business growth and reduces economic impact.

“There are practical changes financial institutions can put in place that can make a real difference, including simplifying application processes, offering smaller starter loans, recognizing alternative business indicators, and providing clearer guidance after loan decisions,” said Harper.

WeBC says it is calling on more financial institutions to review lending policies and work with development lenders to make financing more accessible and responsive to women-led businesses.

“We’ve shown this approach works,” said Harper. “When financial institutions are willing to adapt and partner with organizations like WeBC, capital reaches strong businesses. That’s good for entrepreneurs and it’s good for the economy.”

WeBC has partnered with financial institutions to help modernize how capital is provided to women entrepreneurs. Through the Vancity Women Entrepreneurs Program, delivered in partnership with WeBC, more than $42.5 million has been loaned to women entrepreneurs in the last five years. The program combines flexible financing from Vancity with wrap-around support from WeBC and demonstrates how lending can be adapted to better reflect diverse business models.

Kate Hawley is the founder of Baller Food, a Prince George based business offering food truck service, buffet catering, grazing tables, hot lunch programs, freezer meal boxes, and retail products. Serving both B2B and B2C clients, Baller Food has become a familiar and trusted presence at community events across Prince George and surrounding rural communities from May through October.

Before launching Baller Food, Kate owned Ames Design Studio, a branding and marketing business. That experience would later play an important role in helping her build a strong, recognizable food brand, one grounded in customer service, reliability, and connection.

Kate’s journey into food entrepreneurship wasn’t planned; it was born out of necessity. When COVID hit, her world was turned upside down. She lost access to childcare, was caring for children with special needs, experienced the loss of her partner, a veteran, and came close to losing her home. At the same time, she was facing limited opportunities for professional growth and financial stability.

Starting Baller Food became both a lifeline and a leap of faith.

“COVID flipped my world upside down,” Kate shares. “I needed a way forward, for my family and for myself.”

As her business began to grow beyond a single market table, Kate connected with WeBC to access business support. While demand for Baller Food was increasing quickly, she was navigating unfamiliar territory and trying to do everything herself.

Kate needed guidance, structure, and trusted advice to support her growth sustainably.

WeBC worked with Alexia to secure a business loan that allowed her to repair and brand her bus, stock it with professional-grade products, and invest in the equipment she needed to offer high-quality services. The bus—a retired HandyDART vehicle she affectionately named Bertha—had its share of mechanical challenges, but Alexia met each one with determination.

Alongside the loan, we provided free support from a Business Advisor, and connected her with webinars to help her navigate the complexities of launching a mobile business. From refining her operations to building confidence in her offerings, we were there to support her as she turned setbacks into stepping stones.

The pandemic had delayed her plans, but Alexia never let go of her vision. She kept showing up, learning, and adapting, driven by a deep desire to make wellness more accessible, especially for those with mobility challenges or busy lives. Today, The Beauty Bus is a reflection of her creativity, resilience, and commitment to community care. We’re honoured to have been part of her journey.

Client Q&A

Q: What made you want to be an entrepreneur?

A: I’ve always had a bit of an entrepreneurial spirit. Even before esthetics, I dabbled in creative ventures and freelance projects in the fine arts, which gave me a taste of building something of my own. But what really drew me into entrepreneurship was the desire for freedom. Freedom to shape my own path, to create services that reflect my values, and to make wellness more accessible in a way I wasn’t seeing elsewhere. I wanted to design a business where I could connect deeply with people, bring care right to their doorstep, and create a space that feels personal, comfortable, and inclusive. For me, entrepreneurship was the only way to bring that vision to life.

Q: What’s the biggest lesson you have learned on your entrepreneurial journey?

A: I believe entrepreneurship is a lifelong journey. For me, it started long before The Beauty Bus, through several creative ventures in the fine arts world, and has continued to grow and evolve into what it is today.

The Beauty Bus itself has been years in the making. I first experimented with mobile spa services through in-home appointments, as the bus wasn’t yet converted, and just as I was starting to gain traction, the COVID-19 pandemic shut everything down. That pause was heartbreaking, but it also taught me patience, resilience, and the importance of holding onto a vision even when it felt impossible.

Now, many years later, I’m living that vision. I get to bring care, comfort, and connection directly to people who need it most, and every step has been worth it. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that entrepreneurship isn’t about having it all figured out from the start. It’s about showing up again and again, learning through challenges, and trusting that small steps will eventually build something bigger than you imagined.

Q: Has your community played a role in your business’ success?

A: Absolutely! The Beauty Bus could not exist without the support of my community. From the very beginning, every kind word, every comment or shared post, every piece of encouragement, and every appointment booked has helped breathe life into this dream. When I wasn’t sure if the idea would work, it was my community that said “yes, we want this.” and their belief gave me the courage to keep going, even when things felt uncertain or overwhelming.

Today, every time someone steps onto the bus, I’m reminded that it’s not just my journey. It’s something built together, with and for the people around me. My community isn’t just part of my business’ success; they are the reason it’s possible.

Q: What has your WeBC loan enabled you to do in your business?

A: The loan from WeBC has been such a huge milestone for me, and I’m so incredibly grateful for the opportunity. Access to this capital has allowed me to fix up Bertha, my retired HandyDART bus, which came with a few more mechanical challenges than I anticipated before the conversion into a mobile spa.

Beyond the repairs, the loan has also made it possible to repaint and brand the bus, purchase my initial inventory of skincare and beauty products, and invest in the tools and equipment I need to provide professional, high-quality services. This support has given me the ability to launch with confidence—knowing my space is set up properly, and my offerings are strong from the start. It feels like the solid foundation I needed to step fully into this dream and serve my community with pride.

Q: If you could give one piece of advice to another woman entrepreneur, what would it be?

A: If I could give one piece of advice, it would be this: don’t let perfectionism or self-doubt stop you from starting. As women, so many of us wrestle with anxiety, imposter syndrome, or the belief that we’re not “enough.” I know I do.

The biggest challenge I’ve faced hasn’t been the business itself; it’s been overcoming procrastination and my own inner critic. But here’s the truth: no one is scrutinizing you the way you think they are. In fact, people are often rooting FOR you. And the beautiful thing is, you can always refine, polish, and perfect later, but you can’t improve something that doesn’t exist. So, leap. Start the thing, even if it feels messy or unfinished. Show up anyway. That’s where real growth (and magic) happens.

Author Bio

Throughout her life, Sasha has been telling stories using different mediums with dance, film, and writing. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from Cal State Long Beach and shortly after rescued Cal.

They immediately became inseparable.

Cal has inspired everyone he meets with his quirkiness and resiliency. Sasha hopes this book encourages children and adults to love who they are and embrace their unique qualities. Sasha lives in Kamloops, BC, with her husband, Nate; her daughter, Chloe Ray; and, of course, her pal, Cal.

All Canadian: I’m a local author from Kamloops, BC. The illustrator of the book is from Vancouver, BC and the company we used to self-publish is based in Victoria, BC (Tellwell Publishing).
